I just need somewhere to put it all...

Lately I feel as if I'm barely staying afloat. I feel like I'm just bobbing along in the middle of God's vast ocean, knowing which direction I need to swim in to reach land but struggling to follow that path because I can't actually see the land. I find myself second guessing everything a lot these days.
We have decided to adopt, we are thinking from Ethiopia, and we are so excited! This has been in my heart since I was a little girl. When I was around 7 or 8 years old I would stay with my Madrina (God-mother) in the summer, she had a sister who volunteered at a children's shelter and would go to Mexico and take gifts to the children. I think that's when I knew that's what I wanted to do with my life; I wanted to help people in need. As I grew older I had decided I didn’t want children of my own because I preferred to adopt.. Obviously that plan didn’t go through as I had hoped it would. Seeing as how I have 3 beautiful balls of never-ending energy! Lol So I figured adoption would just always be out of the question. I mean we have 3 energetic kids so it was hard to imagine adding a few more into the mix! Anyways long story short, I really felt God tugging at my heart and I started to notice the people God was placing in my life either had the same desire as I or had already been through adoptions themselves. So my husband and I talked about it (with each other and our oldest son) and we prayed about it and prayed about it. I mean that's a big decision to make and we didn’t want to make it on a whim.. We didn’t want to just make the decision without consulting God then later realize we made the wrong decision. I mean adoption is a serious thing, it’s a forever thing. It’s bringing someone else’s child into your home and loving them as your own, no discrimination, to prejudice, no bias…. Just pure parental love that, in our opinion can only come from God! It is important to be mentally, emotionally and financially prepared.. But, for us, being spiritually prepared is most important. We have come to realize our life isn't about us at all.. Our lives have to be about glorifying God and his Kingdom.. Not satisfying the desires of our flesh.. But satisfying the desires of our spirit! So after allowing the hand of God to tweak our hearts and mold us into a truly new creation.. Here we stand.. Embarking on a new life, uncharted territory (as far as our family is concerned) We preparing to adopt (hopefully 2 older children-around 5 or 6).. Right now we are getting our finances in order.. We aren't financially wealthy.. But I know God will show us a way to make this adoption happen, not for us, but for the advancement of his Kingdom! I know this is His will for our life!

We have also decided to homeschool our oldest son. This is a decision we've been praying about and preparing for, for a while now. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to teach him, after all I'm not a “certified teacher”.. So we did a "test run", so to speak.. I set out to teach him during the summer to see if he could learn at home with me as his teacher. Let’s just say I was more than skeptical! I had planned to start the week after school let out. But the last 2 weeks of school he didn’t get any homework assignments and he was pretty upset about it. (He enjoys doing schoolwork, that’s just him) So he asked me if I could give him homework.. lol.. So I did! We haven’t worked every day.. we put summer school on hold the week before my husband left, then for 2 weeks after he left my oldest and I were in a funk and didn’t feel up to it cause he missed his Daddy and I missed my husband. But we snapped out of it and got to work! Well here we are in July, we’ve figured out a system that works for us, I give him work to reinforce what he learned in kindergarten and he likes to tell me what he wants to learn about and I set out to gather information and teach him those topics. When he was in school his reading comprehension, phonics and handwriting skills were lacking because his teacher didn’t have a whole lot of time to work with him and by the time he got home he was completely exhausted and wanted to just “zone out”. I have seen an improvement in his handwriting, reading comprehension and phonics skills. He thoroughly enjoys reading now and it’s awesome! Plus, he has learned all the continents, oceans, hemispheres (including the meaning of the prefix hemi-), directions, place value, regrouping math and the names of the different cloud groups. Next week we will be learning the names and how to identify the different clouds in each group then at the end of the lesson we will be conducting a science experiment where we make clouds. We are both pretty excited! We have also been studying the bible and he’s learned the importance of “loving others the way God loves us”, what that means and what that looks like. It’s amazing the thing’s he has learned in such a short amount of time! But he’s not the only one who has learned something new… I’ve learned to keep a lesson plan, to have patience, to be organized, and to rely on God more than ever. He is a bright boy and he learns so quickly! We are all excited about this coming (home)school year! I’m going to join the local home school support group because they meet every Friday to have the kids get together and learn together, they organize group field trips, and are just a great base of information and support! As for our middle son, we are still planning to send him to K-3 with the school district, we feel he will benefit more from a classroom setting.. at least right now at his age.

Needless to say I’ve been praying harder than I ever have before. I know where God wants to take us and I know how He wants to use us.. These days I just have to keep my head above water and remember I'm not alone in this vast ocean, but that God is here guiding me!

     Hebrews 13:20-21

20 Now may the God of peace—

who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus,

the great Shepherd of the sheep,

and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood—

21 may he equip you with all you need

           for doing his will.

       May he produce in you,

through the power of Jesus Christ,

every good thing that is pleasing to him.
All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.

*sigh* Sorry this is such a long post.. Showing God's love is the most AMAZING gift anyone could give and we are blessed that we have so many people in our lives who display his love on a regular basis. Their actions serve as a reminder to us that the world is bigger than ourselves and our community and there are so many people in this world who are in desperate need of God's love!

Tonight we are going to see Leeland in concert and we're pretty excited! We love all their songs but there is one inparticular that, lately, I can't seem to stop listening to.....

THE DOOR - LEELAND
As the rain falls from heaven
I’m lost in Your love
You’re overwhelming, Jesus
And we’re walking together holding hands
Oh, it’s just You and me, Jesus
Life is good here, fruit is growing on the beautiful branches
There is rest and there is peace inside the shade of Your garden

Jesus, You’re the only one for me there's no way I'm leaving you
You're the love, the way, the life, the truth
You’re the door I’m walking through
Angels are lifting songs of praise oh, they’re just singing Your story
And nothing can take me away from this place Lord, I’m just lost in Your glory
Your love is the reason that I am free And I’m running to You cause You’re all I need

Jesus, You’re the only one for me there’s no way I’m leaving You
You’re the love, the way, the life, the truth You’re the door I’m walking through

You’re the only one for me there’s no way I’m leaving You
You're the love, the way, the life, the truth You're the door I'm walking through
Jesus, You're the only one for me there's no way I'm leaving You

As the rain falls from heaven I’m lost in Your love
You’re overwhelming, Jesus

You're the only one for me there's no way I'm leaving You
You're the love, the way, the life, the truth You're the door I'm walking through
Jesus, You're the only one for me there's no way I'm leaving You

Easter 2010!

Every Easter we say we are going to do something special as a family but we usually don't do much. Well, I'm excited to say Easter 2010 was different! The night before Danny and I stayed up late putting together their Easter baskets complete with chocolate bunny, animal crackers and Veggietales dvd's! We also made them bunny ears like the pair Gavin made at school, and we cut out a cross using colored foam sheets and decorated it with the holy spirit, Hearts that said "He is Risen", the word Love, and a big heart that said victorious! We were planning on using to compliment the Easter story Danny planned on telling the kids and we were hoping to start a kid-sized discussion about what it all meant.

On Easter morning the kids found their treats and were super excited! We started the day by going to church, then we came home and we boiled eggs for the kids to dye. Danny sat around the table with the kids and told them the Easter story about the resurection of Christ, then Danny and Gavin sat there discussing the awesomeness of Jesus, it was so cute! While they talked I baked an Easter egg cake from scratch (both the frosting and cake)!! Then they dyed their eggs, ate the cake and of course we took plenty of pictures of them in the process. After the eggs were all dry and decorated, Danny hid their eggs in the front yard and we had a little Easter egg hunt for them. Then we ended the festivities with cascarones, hanging out with eachother and eating chili dogs!

Here are just a few pictures!

Their Easter spread the night before..
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; We got to see family and friends we haven't seen in months. i got some much needed childless one-on-one girl time with my favorite cousin, who is definitely more like a sister to me! During the week we visited a couple of beaches in Corpus and the surrounding area and we had a great time playing in the sand and walking in the water. My husband and I grew up around the Corpus Christi beaches so it wasn't too big of a deal to us but our kids are growing up on an Afb in a small not-much-to-do town and haven't ever seen the beach. We aren't the outdoor/camping type of family so my husband looked at me like I was crazy when I announced "Everyone get dressed, we are going to spend the day on an adventure.. we're going to explore the wilderness!" When the kids left the kitchen my husband turned to me and said, "What?!? You don't even know what to do in the wilderness, you're going to get us lost." I assured him that they had maps and if I did get us lost we could call the Park Ranger to come and rescue us or someting. (Ley me just say, I do have a bad habit of getting us lost and it usually starts when I call our trip and "adventure" or use the word "explore") We thought it would be cute to dress the part so we had the boys wear the hunter-like vests their grandparents gave them for Christmas... hehe

We loaded up the kids and the dog and we headed out for our weekend adventure. I was pumped and ready to go! My husband on the other hand looked worried. We got to the park, paid the entrance fee, studied the map and started driving around looking for a place to park. After circling around the yurts twice in one direction and three times in the other, my pumpedness soon disappeared.. There were a bunch of signs that said "No Parking" but there weren't any "Parking" signs... and it didn't help that the whole time we were driving around my husband kept saying "Great! We paid eight dollars to get lost. You know we could've done this back home." In my defense, how was I supossed to know there wouldn't be any street signs??

After about 30 minutes of driving in circles, the baby woke up from her nap. I reached in the back to make her a bottle and I realized we forgot the diaper bag at home.. so I thought "it's okay, I'll just giver her the pacifier"... that's when I realized.... we forgot that too! (Our daughter is a screamer so you always have to have a pacifier on hand! ALWAYS!) Well, what it was at home and there was nothing I could do to change that. Not too long after, we found the parking area we couldn't help but laugh at ourselves when we realized we had driven by it at least six times.. LOL By the time we unloaded everyone from the car, I think Gavin (our oldest), my husband, and I were the only ones who were ready to have fun even the dog lost his perkiness.

Once we started walking the foot trails everyone seemed to get over their grumpiness and we all had a fun family time. Last week I had a lot of fun meeting new bloggers so I decided to join in on the fun again this week! I love Fridays because they are the last workday of the week, our family usually goes out to eat, my husband and I watch movies or catch up on the weeks DVR shows, and if the weather is good we will all play outside until it gets dark...... Friday's for us are just so much more relaxing which makes them so much fun!

Anyways, Happy Friday Follow everyone! I hope you enjoy your day of blog hopping (I know I will! The sun was shining and the weather was warm and breezy. When my husband got home from work we all went for a walk on the trail that winds around the neighborhoods. We do this 5-6 days out of the week because if Andy doesn't get out and go for a walk to burn off energy he will bark and play all night. LOL Usually we are rushing to get home because it's in the 40's, cold and windy.. but today was different! It felt so good to be outside, I think we must have walked close to 2 miles.. and it felt great! Once we got home my husband and I started talking about school and pcs opportunities while we were still standing in the driveway. Our kids got tired of waiting to go inside so they started digging around in the dirt and before I knew it we were rescuing displaced worms and playing soccer in our driveway and front yard! We even let Andy off his leash to join in the fun... the baby sat in her stroller excitedly yelling at everyone as she watched the ball go back and forth. It was the best time we've had outdoors in a while! Dare I say, it was "picture perfect". LOL I'm really looking forward to spending time as a family outdoors soaking up the beautiful spring weather. It will be our first spring having a dog so we are pretty excited about integrating him into our family games! We decided, since the weather is going to be nice this weekend, we are going to go to our local state park and walk some of the trails out there. We've never been to a state park so we are really excited to see all the wildlife in it's natural habitat and to see how our kids (and dog) are going to react to the deer and other wild animals running around the great outdoors!

Well, goodnight bloggers I'm off to go find the camera so I can charge the battery! This weekend is going to be so much fun! I can't wait!

By the way, tomorrow is Friday Follow! Since I had a blast last week I'm going to join in the fun again tomorrow! YAY! (ok, I'm going to go now because I'm way too excited.. more so than I should be... ha ha) Goodnight! :)

Books, books, books

For as long as I can remember I've loved to read. I learned how to read at a very young age, courtesy of my father and hooked on phonics. Once I learned how to read felt like I was on top of the world.. like I had opened the door and entered a world I had been watching but was never really able to participate in. I wasted no time joining in on the fun! In the mornings I would sit with my father or my grandmother while they drank their morning coffee, I would grab a section of the newspaper and begin to read it.. shaking my head along with them and sighing as I turned the pages, just as I saw them do. I'd usually attempt to discuss world events or whatever else I had just read even though I didn't fully comprehend all of what I took in.

Since then I read anything and everything I could get my hands on! Unfortunately once we had our second child reading just to read went out the window... and boy do I miss it! As a mother with 3 kids, reading isn't exactly high on my to do list. I don't have a lot of extra time to grab a book and read and the times that I do read it's usually a school textbook. I mean, I'm glad that I at least get to exercise my love for reading through my textbooks but I would be wonderful if, for once, I had the opportunity to read a book that I chose. I'm looking forward to the day when I can pick up a book (that I choose) and sit on the sofa in my quiet living room and just read! One day.... one day......

Lord, grant me the ability to sleep!

I have been so tired and drained of energy lately I'm not sure how much longer I can function like this. Last week the youngest children (and dog) in our house seemed to have lost their minds! Our daughter decided she was going to start waking up every 3-4 hours (every night) just for the heck of it. She's determined to stay up for as long as possible, kicking the light up toys in her crib over and over and over again, making them turn on and off until she drifts off to sleep, only to wake up again a few hours later. The walls in our house are pretty thin so all night long you hear *thud* *THUD**insert shrill scream here* *thud-thUD-THUD*. We've tried feeding her, rocking her, bringing her to our bed in the middle of the night, giving her toys to play with, turning the light on and playing with her so she can burn off energy.... nothing.. I mean NOTHING works! She just wants to be laying in bed kicking the crib toys on and off. We took them off for a couple of nights and she cried, hysterically, for way too long (our son loved those toys too and didn't like to sleep without them) Anyways, during her 3rd round with the crib toys (usually around 3 AM or so) her noises usually set off a chain reaction in which our 3 year old son and our puppy decide it's time to wake up and ask for breakfast. I wouldn't mind her beating her crib if she didn't wake Timothy and Andy-Bear. I think it's safe to say that out of everyone in this house they are the hardest to handle, especially at 3 AM!

So, my wonderful husband has to crawl out of bed and looks for his jeans, usually tripping over toys and making grumpy comments, so he could take the dog outside. Since the dog sleep inside he has to wait outside with him until he is finished doing his business. Poor, hunny... I feel bad for him standing out there with the dog in the freezing cold. I would do it, but I'm really afraid of the dark.. seriously... I am. We even sleep with a night light in our room.. (okay, that was probably TMI, but it's the truth) I know, my fear is totally irrational but it's been a fear of mine since I was little and I've yet to overcome it. So because of that, he takes the dog outside and I usually deal with Timmy the toddling terror! Who by the way goes completely insane when it comes to sleeping. He kicks, screams, fights and bangs his head when I try to put him back in bed! Trying to explain that it's nighttime and not morning to a 3 year old while dodging airborne Lightening McQueen's is NOT mine or my husband's idea of a good night's rest!! *sigh*

If only the dog could eat pizza...

We went to Petsmart to buy food for Andy-Bear and boy were we in for a rude awakening! We spent a whopping $123 on food alone! On the drive back home Gavin, our 5 year old, must have heard us talking about how much we had just spent on dog food and he asked us "Why don't we just feed Andy pizza like us? It's like... only $5... or something... and it tastes really good. Well, at least me and my brother like it!" We couldn't help but laugh.... I love the things kids say! LOL Unfortunately Andy-Bear can't partake in our love for pizza so I'm hoping this 30 lb bag of food lasts him the whole month or longer... but the way this puppy eats... psh... I'm having my doubts. I'm pretty sure he went through a 15 lb bag in 1 week! Okay, I'm exaggerating, it was longer than that but it just seemed like the bag finished so quickly! We decided to be smart this time and buy the 30 lb bag and we threw in some canned food to give him a few flavor choices.. I just wasn't expecting to walk out of there having spent as much as we did. LOL

After I put his kibbles in the vittles vault (which by the way is an AWESOME pet food container) I started stocking the shelves with his new canned food. This was his line up:

That's when it hit me!...... The dog eats better than we do! Needless to say, I felt guilty during dinner because my kids were eating pizza (again) and the dog was eating Country Chicken Stew. Which, by the way, smelled sooo good! It had REAL chicken chunks, vegetables and potatoes in it... I was wowed! Andy absolutely loved it and he even asked for seconds! With science diet he hardly ever ate his food and it sure didn't smell anywhere near as good as this food did!

Moral of the story..... We need to eat more like the dog!

As much as our family likes pizza (we eat it most days out of the week) I'm sure they would LOVE a home cooked meal! I found a lot of fun and interesting blogs and gained 30 followers in the process.. Whoo!! Now I feel like I'm not just talking to myself. HaHa I'm not great at meeting people face-to-face so blogging really helps me to meet new people with similar interests. :)

I have issues wen it comes to talking to people face-to-face. When I have to talk to people I get all nervous and I start to turn red, then I feel myself getting all hot and uncomfortable which makes me speed up my talking, then I start to jumble my words.... and before you know it, it's a big mess and I'm left looking for one of my screaming children so I can hide behind them! ugh.... I even have trouble asking the grocery shelf stockers where the bread isle is, seriously. *sigh* I know, I know I have a serious problem... and I'm pretty sure whoever I'm talking to notices my red sweating face too. HaHa But, I'm working on it. Meeting new people at church and at the food pantry seems to be helping! I just have to remember to BREATHE! :) One day.... I'll be able to hold a normal conversation with a total stranger and walk away sweat stain-free!

Well, I'm off to spend time with my wonderful husband! So long Friday, you've been a great day and I'm looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us next week!

finally it's friday!

I love friday's! Not only because the weekend is right on the other side but because we usually don't have any appointments or anywhere we have to be.... making Friday's so much more relaxed than the rest of the week.

Yesterday I saw a Friday Follow button and I thought that would be a great way to meet people. I wanted to make a valentines day wreath but I never got around to it.. so tomorrow my mission is to drop by Hobby Lobby (my favorite store) and see if they have anything left in their Valentine's section.. if I'm lucky they will have useful items at 80-90% off!! If not I'll check Michael's and if there's nothing there then I'll probably just have to wait until next year. Ooh, or maybe I can paint the pre-cut wooden hearts and glue them on a wreath..... hmmmm..... I seem to be ironing out my ideas as I type. ha ha ha Well, all I know for sure is this weekend I WILL make a wreath! :)

I need to increase my activity level!

I was remembering how active I was when I was in school, I swam, ran track, and played in the marching band. I remember I always felt great after working out or playing my sport even when i would wake up at 6 am to swim! Now that I'm older and have a family I don't really do much activity and I'm really starting to realize I need to be more active. I think it will help me feel better and have more energy! I used to go to the gym religiously but once I stopped I never found the drive to start going again. I want to take the 6 week Fit Camp class they have here, but I just can't see myself waking up at 4 (or 6) am to do boot camp style workouts. Maybe I should just buy a treadmill?? hmmm.... Although I must say we are a lot more active as a family now! Ever since Andy joined our family we have been taking him for daily mile walks around the trails here on base. He loves them and so do we! I don't know I just feel like I should be doing more than that.

Maybe I should start walking Gavin to school everyday, we only live a few blocks away, literally. In fact it's so close you can see it from the backyard. When he first started school I excitedly told myself (and everyone else) that I was going to walk him to and from school everyday, and I did!.... for about a day! I don't know, I guess driving to the school is just so much more convenient. Hmmmm...... Perhaps, when the weather gets warmer I'll try again! I wonder if I can bring Andy (our puppy) along for the walk???

Our introduction to the blogging world

I'm Monica!
